What is Khiraule Education and Health Project (KEHP)?

Khiraule Education and Health Project (KEHP) is a registered Charity in England to advance the Education and Health of the people of Khiraule, which is a very remote Sherpa village in eastern Nepal.

It works closely in conjunction with the School Management Committee of Khiraule and the people of the village to identify what is needed and to assist them in the work they are doing. For example, the villagers and the School Management Committee assist with the building work providing their labour free.

The route to Khiraule

Khiraule village is at an elevation of 7,000 ft. (2200 m.). It is located in Solukhumbu District, Bung VDC, Ward no-9 in the Everest region of Nepal, which is over 60 miles away from the nearest administration centre in Sallery. The nearest road is over a weeks walk away over the high mountainous terrain of the Himalayas. There is no electricity or running water in Khiraule.

Khiraule can only be reached by a ten day strenuous Trek from the nearest road or a hard four days Trek from the nearest mountain airport of Phaplu or Lukla. Khiraule is also on the route of the Arun Valley Trek. The trekking route which starts from east Dharan, to Dankuta, to Tumlingtar and on to the Khumbu region (Everest region) of Nepal. This old Trekking route is very rarely used now so Khiraule is isolated from outside contact.
